Our Help For Parents On Preparing Your Child For An Autism Assessment
We know that waiting for an autism assessment for your child can bring forth a mix of emotions- anticipation and anxiety and it can be overwhelming. As a parent, it’s only natural to have concerns for your child’s well-being. That’s why at My Solution Wellbeing and The Rainbow Medical Group we want to make sure your child is as comfortable and supported throughout this process as possible.
Our private autism assessments are designed and focused on offering reassurance to the child as well as the parents throughout this sensitive process. Especially as it can be a challenging time for families. Hopefully this will allow you as parents to relieve some stress and reduce any lingering nerves you may be feeling.
We will provide helpful insights and strategies to guide you through this phase.
Understanding The Autism Assessment Process:
Begin by familiarising yourself with the autism assessment process. Knowledge is power, and understanding what to expect can help alleviate anxiety for both you and your child. Parents will be present with the child during the assessment so they won’t be alone.
During the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), parents will be asked questions regarding how their child handles social situations, makes friends, expresses emotions, communicates, their language and if they’ve got any repetitive or restricted behaviours.
It would be helpful for parents to start thinking of these behaviours in preparation for their child’s autism test as well as gathering school reports and information or observations from school.

A Message From Our Psychiatrist
Before the autism assessment, you may be thinking, “How should I prepare my child?” Our trusted psychiatrist, Dr JM Vilanova, suggests taking a step back. The key? Don’t over-prepare your child. In fact, less is more.
Preserving Natural Behaviour:
During the assessment, your child will engage in a playful interaction with the assessor with lots of toys and objects. This dynamic allows for close observation but also provides a comfortable and interactive environment. Through this engaging play session, we aim to gain valuable insights into your child’s behaviour and responses. Questions will be seamlessly integrated into the play.
Our goal is to preserve the authenticity of your child’s behaviour throughout the assessment.
Over-explaining or detailing the process might inadvertently influence their responses and can change the outcome of the results. By allowing your child to approach the assessment naturally it ensures a genuine reflection of their typical behaviours, which will provide us with a more precise outcome.
Our Commitment to Your Journey:
We understand the instinct as parents to worry and stress about your little ones, it is completely natural. However, worrying about the level of preparation before the autism test is unnecessary. Rest assured, our commitment extends beyond the assessment room. We are here to support you throughout the entire journey. Ease into the process and trust that by allowing your child to be themselves, we can better understand and support them.
Preparing your child for the autism test doesn’t need to be exhaustive briefings. Instead, it’s about creating an atmosphere where their true selves can shine through. Autism is a broad condition, and each child’s journey with autism is a unique and will come across different challenges.
At My Solution Wellbeing and the Rainbow Medical Group, we truly understand the importance of individual care. Our counselling team is dedicated to providing a warm and personalised approach, supporting you every step of the way – before, during, and after your child’s autism test. We’re here for you.
