How Counselling Can Help You
Everyone experiences emotional challenges differently. For some people, these develop gradually over time, while for others they follow a significant life event. Whatever your circumstances, counselling gives you the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings with an experienced therapist who listens without judgement and supports you throughout your journey.
People seek counselling for many different reasons. You may be living with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, bereavement or relationship difficulties. Others attend therapy to improve self confidence, strengthen emotional resilience or gain greater self awareness that helps them make healthier choices in everyday life.
Counselling isn’t about telling you what to do. Instead, it helps you understand the patterns influencing your thoughts, emotions and behaviours while introducing practical techniques that encourage lasting positive change. Many clients continue benefiting from these skills long after therapy has ended.
At My Solution Wellbeing Edinburgh, every counselling programme is tailored to the individual. Through recognised therapeutic approaches and compassionate support, we help clients improve emotional wellbeing while creating meaningful progress that lasts.
Benefits of Counselling With Our Edinburgh Team
Counselling can have many benefits for your mental and emotional well-being. To maximise these benefits, you need to find a good counsellor to guide you through the process. At My Solution Wellbeing, we have a team of qualified counsellors and therapists who are dedicated to working with you and helping you overcome various struggles.
Convenient scheduling
Lack of time is the greatest hinderance to seeking counselling. If you’re working, getting time for counselling within your work hours can be challenging. With our team, you can choose your counselling appointment during the day, in the evening or over the weekend. This makes it easier to find time outside of your schedule to attend to your mental and emotional well-being without interfering with your work.
Tailored counselling services
Even in people who share the same struggle, the approach to counselling can be very different, usually because of the personality and backstory of each individual. That is why the best counselling services will provide tailored counselling that is specifically tailored to your needs and challenges. My Solution Wellbeing has a team of skilled, qualified, and registered counsellors who will develop tailored counselling therapy sessions designed to meet your needs and support your journey.
Professional and registered counselling
There is a medical approach to counselling that requires counsellors to undergo the necessary training and certification before they can start providing counselling services in Edinburgh, ensuring the safety and well-being of those receiving counselling. This is why we only work with BACP-registered counsellors who have undergone the necessary training and certification and have years of experience to provide you with the best counselling and the highest chances of success.
Types of Therapy And Counselling Offered in Edinburgh
Counselling can be tailored to address different challenges and struggles. The type of counselling or therapy you need can vary depending on the interventions that have already been tried and the counsellors’ observations. Some of the types of therapy and counselling you can get from My Solution Wellbeing include the following:
Relationship counselling
Struggles, challenges and conflict are part of a healthy relationship. However, sometimes, they can strain the relationship and make you consider abandoning it. However, relationship counselling in Edinburgh can help you work through the problems and give the relationship the best chance of survival.
Bereavement counselling
If you have recently lost a loved one, such as a friend, a family member or even a spouse, you should consider bereavement counselling. Loss of a loved one is one of the most painful and confusing experiences and can be riddled with many symptoms such as sadness, sorrow, guilt and even anger, which can overwhelm you and make it difficult to function, slowly sinking you into depression. Bereavement counselling can help you to safely go through mourning while monitoring your well-being and getting the tips you need to work through the loss.
Children counselling
Children have their fair share of struggles, especially after significant events in life such as moving, parents going through a divorce or losing a loved one. Providing them with children’s counselling in Edinburgh can help them address the sitting issues they are going through and get back to enjoying childhood and normal development.
Anxiety counselling
Anxiety is a condition that affects many people. In severe cases, anxiety can make it impossible for someone to function in certain situations, such as public speaking. With our anxiety counselling, you can get to understand the triggers of anxiety, the symptoms, how to handle yourself when going through an anxiety attack and the different coping mechanisms.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interconnected. It serves as a great way to manage problems by changing unhelpful and negative patterns and behaviours. Our CBT is a goal-oriented approach that helps to manage various mental and emotional concerns.
Stress Counselling
Are you struggling with stress? Is it becoming overwhelming and making it difficult to live life normally? Our stress counselling can help. We take a personalised approach to stress counselling, ensuring you get the support you need when you need it.
The Stages of Counselling
Our counselling sessions vary in form and purpose, but we follow a blueprint that makes our counselling in Edinburgh more predictable and increases the chances of success. While undertaking counselling, you should remember that it is a process that requires patience. It is rarely a quick fix, and sometimes things might get worse before they start to get better.
Stage one: Initial Disclosure
This is also called the relationship-building phase and is where all our counselling sessions begin. During this stage, we focus on engaging with our clients and exploring the issues that directly affect them.
During the first interview, we set the scene for what was to come. Our counsellors focus on effective listening to build a positive relationship. During this stage, we will also take time to understand your goals and the purpose of counselling, to create a customised approach that delivers the best experience and results for you.
When successful, the initial disclosure stage sets a strong foundation for future dialogue and the continuing counselling process.
Stage two: Problem Assessment
During this stage, we continue to build a beneficial, collaborative relationship that makes it easy for our clients to discuss sensitive and private issues. We also start taking a deeper look at the problems you might be facing.
Our counsellor will carefully listen and draw out information about your situation, whether it concerns life, work, home, or education. We will also take a deeper dive into whether you have engaged in counselling.
In these initial stages of counselling, information is crucial and determines how subsequent stages will go. Significant bits of information include identifying triggers, timing, environmental factors and stress levels, among others.
Stage three: Goal Setting
At this point, we have gathered enough information through active listening to better understand your problem, and we can now start working toward solutions through commitment, action, or goal setting. Effective counselling relies on setting appropriate, realistic goals that build on the previous stages.
We identify and develop these goals collaboratively with the client to a set of traps leading to a particular outcome. The goals must be practical, achievable and applicable to real-life situations. This makes it easier for our clients to implement them and stay committed.
Stage four: Counselling Intervention
Counselling intervention will vary depending on the type of counselling, the counsellor’s experience and the theories they are more familiar with, as well as the client’s situation. Depending on the client, their needs and goals, we can use interventions such as CBT, behavioural therapy, or a person-centred approach to engage the client’s self-actualising tendency. The intervention we settle on is a collaborative process aimed at delivering the best experience and outcome for our clients.
Stage five: Evaluation, Termination, or Referral
This is the last stage of counselling and just like all the other steps, it must also be planned well in advance to ensure a positive conclusion that does not trigger anger, anxiety or sadness.
Part of this process is to reach an early agreement on how the therapy will end and what a successful end will look like. In some cases, a referral is inevitable.
While all the stages of counselling are clear, some, like relationship building, are ongoing. Only the termination stage is not continuous.
Types of Counselling We Offer
We offer different types of counselling to accommodate clients with varying schedules and to suit various counselling approaches. Our varied counselling types ensure we can support even the busiest clients, helping them get the support they need.
In-person counselling
In-person counselling involves face-to-face sessions with the client and our counsellor in attendance. Most of these sessions take place in the counsellor’s chambers. In-person counselling is the most popular and effective type, with positive results for most counselling needs.
Group counselling
We offer group counselling, which is most common in professional settings where staff members are battling the same issues. Group counselling is ideal when a group of individuals seeks help with a similar range of issues. In group counselling, group members not only have access to the counsellor but also build important support networks that provide them with additional support outside the counsellor.
It is common for some group members to shift to in-person sessions when they want to focus more on their problems.
Telephonic sessions
For clients who cannot attend in-person counselling sessions, telephonic sessions are a great alternative. These sessions can be scheduled from the comfort of your home or office. This type of counselling is best for busy individuals who might struggle to consistently find time for physical sessions, and also offers an additional layer of confidentiality.
Online counselling
You should consider online counselling if you prefer not to meet your counsellor to protect your anonymity. Online counselling also includes email counselling, where you communicate with the counsellor through email.

Everything discussed during your sessions remains confidential, except in the rare situations where legal or safeguarding responsibilities require information to be shared. Your therapist will explain this fully before therapy begins.
Our Counselling Approaches
Every person’s experiences are different, which is why our Edinburgh therapists use a range of recognised counselling approaches rather than relying on one method for every client. Your therapy is tailored to your individual circumstances, personality and goals, ensuring every counselling journey is as unique as the person receiving it.
As your confidence develops and your needs evolve, your therapist can adapt sessions to ensure your counselling continues providing the most appropriate support throughout your journey.
Integrative Therapy
Integrative therapy combines techniques from several recognised counselling approaches to create a personalised therapeutic experience that reflects your individual circumstances.
Rather than following one structured model, therapy evolves alongside your progress, ensuring each session remains relevant, flexible and focused on helping you achieve meaningful personal growth.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy explores the relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviours. By identifying unhelpful thinking patterns, you can begin replacing them with healthier responses that improve emotional wellbeing while reducing anxiety, stress and depression.
Many clients continue applying CBT techniques long after counselling has finished because of their practical value in everyday life.
Person Centred Counselling
Person centred counselling provides a safe, accepting environment where you can openly explore your thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism or judgement.
Your therapist listens with empathy while allowing you to guide the pace of therapy, helping you build greater self awareness, confidence and emotional resilience.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Sometimes emotional difficulties are influenced by earlier life experiences that continue affecting present day relationships, behaviours and confidence without us fully recognising their impact.
Psychodynamic therapy explores these deeper emotional patterns, helping you gain valuable insight into yourself while encouraging healthier relationships and lasting emotional wellbeing.
Supporting You Every Step of the Way
Counselling is about much more than discussing problems. It’s an opportunity to better understand yourself while developing practical strategies that improve emotional wellbeing and help you respond more confidently to life’s challenges.
Our Edinburgh therapists work alongside you throughout your counselling journey, providing compassionate guidance, professional expertise and personalised support that’s centred around your individual goals.
A Confidential Space to Talk Openly
Many people find it difficult to discuss personal experiences with friends or family. Counselling provides a safe, confidential environment where you can express yourself honestly without fear of judgement or criticism.
Feeling genuinely listened to often becomes the first step towards improving emotional wellbeing and building greater confidence.
Understanding Your Thoughts and Emotions
Emotional wellbeing is influenced by many different factors, including past experiences, current circumstances and established patterns of thinking. Through thoughtful discussion and careful reflection, your therapist will help you understand these connections while developing greater emotional awareness.
This increased understanding often leads to healthier decisions, stronger resilience and improved emotional wellbeing.
Practical Techniques for Everyday Life
Effective counselling should provide practical benefits that continue beyond the therapy room. Throughout your sessions, your therapist will introduce strategies that help you reduce anxiety, manage stress, strengthen communication and respond more positively to future challenges.
These practical skills continue supporting emotional wellbeing long after your counselling journey has ended.
Building a More Positive Future
Whether you’re overcoming a difficult period, strengthening relationships or investing in your long term emotional wellbeing, our Edinburgh counselling team is committed to helping you create meaningful and lasting positive change.
Together, we’ll help you build confidence, emotional resilience and healthier ways of managing whatever life brings in the future.
When Could Counselling Help You in Edinburgh?
There are many reasons why people decide to begin counselling. For some, it follows a significant life event, while for others anxiety, stress or low mood gradually begins affecting everyday life. Whatever your circumstances, counselling provides a confidential environment where you can explore your thoughts, better understand your emotions and begin creating positive, lasting change.
Seeking professional support isn’t a sign of weakness. Many people choose counselling to improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen relationships, build confidence or gain a better understanding of themselves. Whatever your reasons for reaching out, our Edinburgh therapists are here to provide compassionate guidance and practical support.
Anxiety and Persistent Worry
Anxiety can make everyday life feel exhausting. Constant worrying, panic attacks, racing thoughts and physical symptoms can affect your confidence, work and relationships.
Our counsellors help you understand the causes of anxiety while introducing practical coping strategies that reduce worry, strengthen resilience and help you regain a greater sense of control.
Depression and Low Mood
Depression often affects more than your emotions. It can reduce motivation, disturb sleep, impact relationships and make even simple daily tasks feel overwhelming.
Counselling provides a supportive environment where you can explore these experiences while developing healthier coping strategies that encourage long term emotional recovery.
Stress and Workplace Pressures
Modern life often brings significant demands through work, family responsibilities and personal commitments. When stress begins affecting your emotional wellbeing, counselling helps you understand the underlying causes while developing healthier ways of managing pressure.
Learning practical stress management techniques often improves both mental wellbeing and overall quality of life.
Trauma and Emotional Recovery
Traumatic experiences can continue affecting emotions, confidence and relationships long after they have happened. Whether you’re coping with childhood experiences, bereavement, abuse or another significant event, counselling offers a safe environment where healing can begin.
Our therapists work at a pace that feels comfortable for you while supporting long term emotional recovery and wellbeing.
Relationship and Family Challenges
Healthy relationships require trust, communication and understanding. When difficulties arise, counselling helps individuals and couples better understand relationship dynamics while developing healthier ways of resolving conflict.
Improving communication often strengthens relationships while supporting greater emotional wellbeing.
Bereavement and Major Life Changes
Losing someone important or experiencing another major life transition can leave you feeling uncertain and emotionally overwhelmed.
Counselling offers compassionate support while helping you process grief, adapt to change and gradually rebuild confidence for the future.
Building Confidence and Personal Growth

We take pride in the trust our clients place in us. Here’s what they have to say about their experience and our commitment to quality.
What stands out most is the way Dima treats her with genuine respect and absolutely no judgment. She listens carefully, validates her feelings, and guides her in a way that feels supportive rather than pressured. My daughter has really responded to Dima’s style of therapy, and it’s helped her grow in confidence, manage her emotions better, and develop healthier ways of coping with challenges.
As a parent, it’s reassuring to know my daughter is working with someone so compassionate and skilled. I’m truly grateful for the positive impact Dima has had on her wellbeing, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for an excellent therapist for their child or teenager.
Sophia is patient, professional, and genuinely cares, and it’s been clear throughout that she is fully committed to helping them grow and move forward.
I’m so grateful for the guidance and support Sophia has provided—it’s made such a difference. I would highly recommend My Solution Wellbeing Counselling to anyone looking for the right support.
Elena was firm, but understanding, with a great listening manner and ability to provide insight and advice specific to our situation. She was priced very reasonably considering the other counselling services I had looked at and had good availability which so sessions were arranged to work best for all of us.
The office is clean, warm and nicely furnished and the location easy to get to. I can’t fault the professionalism that Elena provided and would recommend her highly to anyone looking to seek help with all manner of relationship issues. I hope to return to Elena for one on one sessions in the new year.
Stacey was understanding, knowledgeable and very patient as we unpacked the reasons why I may be feeling this way.
Obviously there is no magic switch, but I feel so much better.
Thank you so much Stacey.
Nichole is incredibly calm, kind, and understanding – but we also always have a laugh, which makes the sessions feel comfortable and natural. Her services are 10/10, and her prices are very affordable compared to other places.
If you’re looking for someone who will genuinely listen, support, and help guide you to a better place, Nichole is amazing!
I really can’t recommend the wonderful Sherry enough!
Guidance from Becky was highly valued & worked wonders in our marriage going forward.
After only 4 sessions we was advised we didn’t need anymore help.
If you feel like saving your marriage when it’s struggling, Becky can make you realise & change things you are un-aware of.
It saved our marriage & I’m forever grateful.
All the best Becky, much love.
For so long, I was convinced I wasn’t strong enough or good enough — but Sophia has opened my eyes. Her insight, empathy, and wisdom have given me the confidence to believe in my own potential again.
Working with her has been nothing short of transformative. My sessions with Sophia are one of the greatest things I’ve ever done for myself, and I will always be grateful.
I feel like I have known her for years and have found my sessions incredibly helpful.
She has helped me get control over my life, I couldn't recommend her or my solutions wellbeing enough. They're incredible!
Sharon's gentle approach to assessment and caring nature quickly put me at ease, and I began to look forward to our sessions. The entire experience was enlightening, and I would gladly return to Sharon for more sessions if I ever needed to explore new issues.
I can't recommend her highly enough; she truly understood me and helped me reflect on aspects of myself that I had previously overlooked. She provided me with thought-provoking strategies to tackle the dilemmas I was facing, and I'm pleased to say that, with the support that Sharon gave me, I'm progressing very well with the decisions that I made. Although my time with Sharon was brief, I'm very thankful for it.
Thanks to her support, I’ve gained so much clarity and feel lighter, more grounded, and more in control of my emotions. She helped me understand myself better and gave me the tools to move forward with more confidence.
If you’re thinking about starting therapy, Jag is an incredible therapist—warm, intuitive, and truly supportive. I’m so grateful I found her
I had the honour of working with her for a year on a patient/therapist basis and I could not have asked for better support.
I work well with visuals to explain situations I'm experiencing and she had no trouble at working with and expanding visuals as I worked through things with her.
I'm actually really sad to move on (even though that is obviously a good thing!)
She's absolutely brilliant and deserves every bit of praise that can be given to her!
